Following Beau Is Afraid, director Ari Aster of Midsommar reunites with Joaquin Phoenix for a thriller film depicting how an election in a small town, locked down during the pandemic, escalates into a nationwide incident.

In 2020, in the small town of Eddington, New Mexico, USA. The COVID-19 lockdown forces residents into suffocating isolation, pushing their frustration and anxiety to the breaking point. Amidst this, Sheriff Joe clashes with the ambitious Mayor Ted, who aims to save the town by attracting an IT company. Their dispute over mask-wearing suddenly leads Joe to run for mayor. The conflict between Joe and Ted spreads to those around them, and social media erupts with fake news and hatred. Meanwhile, Joe's wife, Louise, becomes captivated by the inflammatory videos of cult leader Vernon and delves into conspiracy theories. As suspicion, controversy, and anger swirl, violence begets violence, and criticism and conspiracy obscure the truth, the town of Eddington hurtles towards ruin.

Joaquin Phoenix plays Sheriff Joe, Pedro Pascal plays Mayor Ted, Emma Stone plays Joe's wife Louise, and Austin Butler plays cult leader Vernon. The film has been selected for the Competition section at the 78th Cannes Film Festival in 2025.
